Hailing from a village in Western Ghats of Karnataka, I have natural love for Mountains, Waterfalls and Forests. I started trekking from January of 2008 and have never looked back.
I have done around 40 treks in Karnataka and 7 treks in the mighty Himalayas.
This blog series is all about Do-It-Yourself treks in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. The List includes some of the unpopular treks. Let's Begin.
Standing tall at an altitude of 1895 meters MSL, Kudremukh is a Moderate-Difficult trek in Mudigere Taluk of Chikmagalur Dist. Kudremukh peak lies inside Kudremukh National Park, a Tiger reserve and wildlife sanctuary.
Permission from Range Forest Office (RFO) and a guide accompanying you is a must to trek inside the WLS.
Permissions are usually given from 1st May to 31st December. Permissions can be directly acquired from RFO, Kudremukh Office.
Base camp, Mullodi is 6km from Balgal. Balgal is around 9 kilometers from Kalasa on Kalasa - Kudremukh Road.
There are numerous homestays in Mullodi that provide stay, food and help you with guide and arrange permission from RFO, Kudremukh at a nominal cost.
Total trek distance is 10km one way. Initial 5 Kilometers are easy with flat terrains and numerous streams. once you reach Lobo mane, midway, route starts to climb and its gets tougher. Lobo mane is a place where a family of Lobos lived for a longer time until Kudremukh became WLS and people were asked to leave. Here, route from Naravi, a village in Karkala taluk joins from left. It is an old trek route which is now closed.
Once you cross onti mara (Lone Tree) and more forests, path stars to zigzag and you lose all your energy under hot midday Sun. Keep yourself hydrated. once you reach the flat surface, watch out for an old church towards your right. The Church was built by British which is now abandoned.
Another kilometer of flat walk and you reach the summit of Kudremukh. From the peak, to west is the plains of Karavali of Karkala Taluk, to South is the valley of Netravati River, Charmadi range and other peaks. to West is the beautiful valley of Kudremukh and samse town. To North is the evergreen forests of Kudremukh WLS.
Walk back 10 KM to reach Mullodi and and somavati waterfall awaits you for a refreshing bath.
